Episode 63: When Will We Be Voting Online?

Polling stations may yet be a thing of the past...

What a busy spring we’ve had ! This week, Charley and I return from London and record a show about Internet voting — the democratizing impact it could have, and the security concerns that are holding it back.

Joining us on the show is professor, author and blogger Dr. Bill Kelleher who helps us delve into this seemingly commonsense, straightforward electoral reform for the modern era.

Also on the show this week:

  • Congress’ JOBS Act — the incredible bipartisan bill hoping to make it easier for startups and small businesses to raise capital and file for IPO.
  • The New Yorker editorial creating a storm with new stats about gun ownership. The lowdown: fewer people are owning more guns.
  • The Supreme Court is set to reconsider the controversial 5-4 Citizens United case. Out bet is that the law allowing unlimited corporate spending in political elections will indeed be overturned.

That’s all for this week. Enjoy the show and and always,  let us know what you think:

Episode 62: Americans Elect Making Waves? Romney’s Primary Hat-trick and the Supreme Court Case of a Generation

Magic Johnson -- proud new owner of the LA Dodgers. $2 billion later.

We’re back from our little Chicago-induced break, and we’re here to fill you in the happenings of the week. We have an update from the GOP primary scene and from the halls of the supreme court who met last week to hear three days of health care arguments. We are also delighted to bring you an interview with Ileana Wachtel from Americans Elect — the new platform hoping to facilitate the first direct, online, presidential election.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • As the new baseball season gets underway, we start with the news that in the most expensive transaction for any sports team, Magic Johnson buys the historic LA Dodgers from the much-troubled Frank McCourt
  • Romney wins in in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington D.C., but Santorum hangs on. Is he waiting for his home state of Pensylvania?
  • We talk to Americans Elect about who they are, what they do, where they want to be in 4 months (and 4 years), and what they think about all the money in politics.
  • To wrap things up, we discuss the administration’s Affordable Care Act — what they arguments are, how the justices responded and what we think will happen. Our money is on 5-4, or 6-3 in favor. What do you think?

Episode 61: The Creepy Apps, Shaky Hands, Music and Start-ups Podcast from SXSW

They've got drums. But legal protection? Surprisingly, the answer might be yes.

Ah, SXSW. That two-week long Festival of Everything That’s Cool Right Now. It’s still rolling on in Austin, Texas as it write this, but we here at Rocket Lawyer have returned. After all, we were there for the Interactive portion. Our band just isn’t that good.

Most of this week’s episode is comprised of interviews we conducted during South by Southwest. We were lucky enough to sit down with three different music attorneys and get their perspective on streaming, iTunes, 360 contracts, the use of labels, how bands make money, and the idea of the artist as an entrepreneur. There’s a lot of good information if you’re in a new band or one that’s had a little success and is looking to take the next step.

We also caught up with Scott Case, CEO of Startup America. He was thrilled with the passion and ideas in his organization’s Start-Up Village and has some great advice for budding businesses out there.

Here’s what we learned at SXSW:

Episode 60: Justice and the Death Penalty

Mitt Romney had a fine Super Tuesday. Is he a shoe-in yet?

Spring has sprung and, as Giants fans, we’re hoping for something more like 2010 than last year. But this weeks podcast isn’t about baseball. Sure, Charley’s excited about Little League starting back up, but what we’re spending our time on this week is something a bit more important. We talked about:

  •  The gentleman on the left’s victorious (but not triumphant) Super Tuesday wins.
  • The brand new iPad and the screen that’s nicer than my TV at home.
  • Did Apple monkey with ebook pricing? And will they pay for it?
  • And finally (and most importantly), a long look at the death penalty in light on California’s ballot initiative. Is it fair? And is it finally time to rethink capital punishment in America?
